The Intruder: Number one in our hearts - Photo Contest Winner!

Over the last few months we have been promoting our very own - first ever Gorge Fly Shop: Casting for Recovery Photo Contest

Although October 30th marked the end to our contest it does not mark the end to some of the stories, memories or representation behind each photo. While the composition of the photo below was excellent what really touch us deep in our hearts is the compelling story behind the photo. Mark was really able to share the emotion and overall meaning for the contest which was to bring awareness to this terrible disease and continue the fight for a cure.

"The Intruder"

The Intruder

"JoAnne amd I went steelhead fishing to take some photos for the contest and maybe catch a fish. JoAnne is a 61 year old breast cancer survivor who underwent a double mastectomy as part of her treatment. She started fly fishing last year after her treatment & is a pretty darn good Spey caster. She is a beautiful girl & I was originally thinking of shooting her fishing in something pink or whatever , just cute & cheerful. Turns out I just couldn't do it. Breast cancer is not cute or cheerful at all, I just kept thinking about what it was really like when we got the news. I ran across this & had to shoot it. The intruder represents the newest development & arguably the best effort to date in the decades long effort to capture a steelhead on a fly. It is beautiful, creative, innovative and; in this case pink. In this image, it represents the current state of the cure effort. The rotting fish represents the disease itself, also an intruder , subdued by the cure. This is what I hope for. Not very pretty, anyway this is my submittal."
